History
The Department of Statistics was established in the year 1968 along with department of Mathematics. The renowned Mathematician and Statisticians namely Prof. A. N. Chikhalikar, Prof. V. Laskmikantham, Prof. S. G. Prabhu-Ajgaonkar, Prof. B. G. Pachpatte headed the Department. The independent Department of Statistics was established on 1st May 1992. Thereafter independent Department of Statistics was headed by nationally and internationally recognized Statisticians namely Prof. L. B. Thakur, Prof. S. G. Prabhu-Ajgonkar and Prof. V. H. Bajaj. Prof. S. G. Prabhu-Ajgonkar has significant contribution in theory of estimation in sampling at International level. Further, his research work on Horvitz Thompson T3 class a linear estimator has been recognized worldwide. He also developed new class of estimators in sampling theory and now it is known as Prabhu-Ajgonkar’s estimators. Dr. L. B. Thakur Contributed mainly in Multivariate Analysis and Operations Research. Prof V. H. Bajaj was head for long time and he contributed a lot in Fuzzy Theory and Operations Research.
The department has distinguished alumni like Prof. Thomas Vargese, Professor, Alberta University, Canada. Dr. A.M. Pedgaonkar, Chief Statistician, Reserve Bank of India, Prof. L. A. Aziz, Professor of Statistics, University of Behrin, Prof. M.A Khan, Registrar, Mumbai University, Mumbai , Prof. M. N. Deshpande, Director, Institute of Science, Nagpur and many more. Number of alumni of this department are working in various sectors all over the globe specially in the field of teaching, research, state and central government, industries etc.
