Marathwada University was inaugurated on 23rd August 1958 by the first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. The Government of Bombay provided a two-storied building belonging to the middle school in Aurangpura (New Zilla Parishad) along with its annexes for the University's initial use, until its own buildings could be constructed on the campus. These existing buildings were intended to house the office, University departments, and the library.
The University library began functioning in December 1959 with the appointment of its first Librarian, Shri. N. A. Gore, a Sanskrit scholar and ideologist. The foundation stone for the library building was laid on 16th October 1960 by the then Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri Yashwantraoji Chavan, and it was inaugurated by President Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan on 25th March 1966. In May 1966, the library moved to its new building on the University campus. A significant acquisition was the large collection of 45,000 books obtained from Raja Shamraj Rai Rajwant Bahadur, Hyderabad, in 1960.
The UGC sanctioned the establishment of a study center in the city in 1970, which was transferred to the library in 1978. However, the University library had to close down the study center in 1988 due to technical difficulties. During the sixth plan period, the UGC recommended the creation of a documentation section for the library and sanctioned two posts for professional assistants, which were filled in 1980.
In 1971, the library introduced reprographic services with the PAN-PRINT Advani over the LIN CON Xerox machine. As the PAN-PRINT machine was not a direct copier and was time-consuming, the library purchased a Canon plain paper copier in 1985, followed by a Lanier copier in 1999 and another Canon copier on 1-4-2005. Based on the recommendations of the K. S. Deshpande committee (1977), the library acquired an intercom system in 1990. On 14th January 1994, Marathwada University was renamed Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University. Internet and E-mail services commenced in 2005, and facsimile service began in 2007. The UGC and INFLIBNET sanctioned the INFONET Project for the Library, although it was initially managed by the Department of Computer Science.
To structure The Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University to be an Epitome of Excellence by creating and imparting time-responsive Quality Education to address the Changing Scenario, keeping Research and Development at its core, for ‘Anyone’ at ‘Anytime’ and ‘Anywhere’.
