Welcome to the Department of Botany, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad. This is nationally and internationally renowned Department established in 1962. It was started in the premises of Milind College of Science and shifted in its own building in 1967. Late Prof. K. B. Deshpande was the founder Head of the Department. It is said that, the Universities are known by the Professors and we proudly say that, this Department was shaped by the stalwart Botanists like - Late Prof. K. B. Deshpande, Prof. R. M. Pai, Prof. R. N. Joshi, Prof. S. T. Tilak, Late Prof. V. N. Naik, Late Prof. L. V. Gangawane, Late Prof. A. B. Sapre, Prof. N. P. Vaikos, Prof. D. S. Mukadam, Prof. A. M. Mungikar, Prof. D. S. Pokle, Prof. V. S. Kothekar, Late Prof. Bharti Jadhav, Prof. P. B. Papdiwal, Prof. Suniti Barve, Sr. Prof. A. M. Chavan etc. The present faculty is also doing well to continue this tradition.
We offer M. Sc. and Ph. D. programs in Botany. We have four specializations like - Cytology and Genetics, Plant Pathology, Taxonomy of Angiosperms and Plant Physiology. The Department is now a two storied building with one seminar hall, one lecture hall, 5 laboratories for M. Sc., 13 research laboratories, museum, glass house, tissue culture laboratory and molecular biology laboratory, herbarium and Botanical garden. It is also equipped with photographic section and Departmental library. In addition to this, each teacher has independent cabin with all facilities including computer, scanner, printer, refrigerator etc. "BAMU" is an internationally recognized Herbarium in-housing 1,04,000 plant specimens. It is the only Herbarium among the Indian Universities who has got the right to cast 2 institutional votes in the Nomenclature Section of International Botanical Congress held at Shenzhen, China in July 2017. Prof. Arvind S. Dhabe has casted his 1 personal vote and 2 institutional votes on behalf of "BAMU" Herbarium. Our Botanic Garden is considered to be the largest Botanic Garden among Indian Universities having 215 species of trees and other 600 species of Botanical interest. It has been enlisted in the Directory of Botanic Gardens in India. Both the Herbarium and Botanic Garden are proved to be important tools for teaching and research in Botany.
Our most of the students awarded with fellowships/ scholarships like EBC, GOI, UGC National Merit, UGC Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship for SC/ST, UGC Maulana Azad National Fellowship for Minorities, BARTI, MAHAJYOTI, SARTHI Fellowships of Government of Maharashtra, Eklavya Scholarship, Dakshina Abhidan Shishyavrutti, Dr. BAMU Golden Jubilee Scholarship and many more.
We welcome the energetic, enthusiastic budding Botanists for shaping their future in the ragging free, student centered, student's friendly and healthy atmosphere of Department of Botany in naturalistic campus of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad.
