Department insights

History

The department of Electronics and Computer Science came into existence in 1989, on non-grant basis. In the absence of state central funding, the university started only M.Sc. (Computer Science) with an intake capacity of 16 students and funds were granted for the infrastructure (without teaching staff) from the University development fund. Prof S. C. Mehrotra former Head and a well-known scientist and the backbone of department played important role in sustaining the department in its growing years. The long felt need for the resources was partially achieved by the announcement by the Government of Maharashtra on January 4, 1994 while declaring the expansion of University's name to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University. The Government has approved the establishment of the Department of Electronics and Computer Science and that it will provide funds for the building and faculty (1-Professor, 2-Reader and 4-Lecturer in the first instance). The announcement gave a fresh lease of life to the department. The courses have started on regular basis since 1994-95. Prof. K. V. Kale former Head and a well-known researcher understanding the future need of IT and its scope for Marathwada region, due to his efforts, University has started M.Sc. (Information Technology) from the academic year 2000-01 in the department on non-grant basis under his leadership.

The department has shifted to the new building in 2001 with an area of 1080sq. m.. The name of the department has changed to Department Of Computer Science And Information Technology in June, 2001.The B.Sc. Integrated Course was executed in the department during 2009-2012. Prof K. V. Kale is also instrumental in bringing major research and other facilities namely UNIC [University Network & Information Center], UGC-SAP, DST FIST for department and university. The University was executed M.Phil. (Computer Science) from the academic year 2009-2023 and Prof. R.R. Deshmukh former Head and known researcher added a new dimension to department by initiating and starting AICTE approved M. Tech. (Computer Science and Engineering) from the academic year (2012-2021). He also facilitated important foreign collaboration for department mainly Italy, Japan and Russia. The department has taken off well with the advanced facilities and laboratories in the field of Computer Science &Information Technology. University has started M.Sc. (artificial Intelligence) from the academic year 2021-22 in the department on non-grant basis under his leadership.
