The Department of Environmental Science is one of the earliest Departments started in Indian Universities since 1985. The department of Environmental Science is unique having teaching staff all highly qualified specifically, M.Sc., Ph.D. and NET-SET qualifications in Environmental Science having field experiences and expertise in number of fields like Ecology, Biodiversity, Environmental Legislation, Industrial Pollution Control, Environmental Statistics, Energy Resources, Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Microbiology and Biotechnology, Disaster Management, Water and Wastewater treatment technology, Air pollution control technology, Industrial safety, EIA, CDM, Sustainable Development, Solid & Hazardous Waste management, Remote sensing & GIS, Green Technology etc. The department is also running Environmental Consultancy laboratory and extending consultancy services to various industries, institutions etc.

The Department has full-fledged Teaching faculty along with CHB faculties for running regular M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Environmental Science on Full Grant basis which is unique support for P.G. in Environmental Science in the State. The department is having its own state of art facilities and has access to the latest facilities and laboratories in the field of environment for all sort of environmental research. The Department is most active with dynamic staff promoting many extracurricular and Co-Curricular activities along with the academic and outreach activities.

Research activities in the department are multidimensional and need based emphasizing the industrial need and social problems focused in depth considering the society and common man's sufferings to be resolved. The departmental staffs have conducted many research activities with the support from various funding agencies like UGC, MOEFCC, DST, DBT, ICSSR, BRNS, CSIR through Minor/Major research projects etc with different funding agencies and research organizations like B.A.R.C., Government of Maharashtra etc. etc.

The course of M.Sc. Environmental Science is designed as per the present needs of industrial and Professional consultancy services, development of administrative, management and academic skills and at par with NET/SET syllabi. The department has been approved for academic flexibility which has made it possible to modify the syllabi contents and reframe from time to time after every 2-3 years considering the need of time and demand from industries to incorporate recent developments and new trends in the subjects. Audio-visual teaching aids, Smart boards and internet are routinely used for class room teaching and routine practical for all. Apart from the academic curricula the students are assigned field trips, excursions, and industrial visits and special in-plant training in industries. The students are encouraged for research through the projects as a part of partial fulfillment of M.Sc. Degree course. The students are also given exposure to seminars, short-term trainings and guest lectures by eminent environmentalist. The faculty promotes the interest of the student to enrich their knowledge and involvement in the subject.

The alumni members of this department are presently working at International and National levels in various fields like Education, Industry, Banking sectors, Agriculture, Medical, Central and State government services. Most of the alumni are working as key persons in Education field, Pollution Control Board, NGO's, Industries in India and abroad and in the field of Environmental Consultancies. The employment percentage of the students beside their self employment firms like consultancies is about 98%. The students from foreign countries also get admitted to M.Sc as well as Ph.D course since last 39 years.

The department has so far produced more than 500 post graduates and at about 80 Ph.D. Scholars. The major domains of research activities are in the areas of Environmental monitoring, Environmental Managements, Water and Air Pollution modeling, Waste Water Treatment, Solid and Hazardous Waste Management, under water quality testing, LCA, EIA, Wild life, Energy studies, Ecology, Hydrobiology and Limnology, Toxicology, RS, GIS and its applications, Disaster Management, Environmental Biotechnology, Environmental Microbiology etc. The departmental faculty have published more than 500 research papers in International & National reputed peer reviewed journals with high impact factor (from 0.2105-6.94) with citation index. At Present, teaching faculties in the department are Prof. S.S.Patil, Prof. M.B. Mule, Prof. N. N. Bandela, Dr. B.L.Chavan, and Dr. Yogita L. Padme and many of the visiting faculties are sharing the responsibility of teaching.

History

The Department of Environmental Science was established in June 1985 as a pioneer in the State and one of the beginners for M.Sc. Environmental Science course. Contributory teachers from Botany, Zoology, Industries etc. were invited to associate with departmental teaching. Initially the intake capacity of the department was 12, subsequently the number was increased to the tune of 32. Eminent teachers like Prof. R. Nagbhushanam, Prof. S.T. Talak, Prof. N. R. Rajderkar, Prof. B. N. Pande and Prof. Dr. S. B. Wagh were in association with teaching in the department. Many experienced experts in the field of environment from the state and the country like Dr. E.V. Mule from M.O.E.F. New Delhi, Dr. Raidu from T.P.C.B, Cheenai, Dr. Ramtake, from NEERI, Dr. Clwde Alvavis from Goa foundation., Dr. Bharat Nimbare from M.P.C.B. Mumbai, Dr. Pillai from Orchid chemicals, Cheenai, Dr. Khambe from Miraj, Prof. Naidu from Shri Venkateshwara University, Tirupati, Prof.Shashikumar from Jammu, Prof.Subbarao and Dr.Kameshwarao from Waltior, Prof. S. M. Reddy from Warangal, Prof. Manoharchary from Hyderabad, Prof. A.K.Jain from Gwalior, Prof. K.L.Tiwari from Raipur, Prof Gunale from Pune etc. are frequent visitors of the department as eminent resource persons.

Admission and allotment by University Research & Recognition Committee

Admissions:
  1. In response to the advertisement for registration, (in newspapers and University Website in the last week of May), interested students will have to register themselves.
  2. Duly filled Application Form (available on University website) should be filled in prescribed format and submitted to the Department of Environmental Science office.
  3. Admission will be done on the basis of performance of students at Common Entrance Test (CET). Number of students called for the written test may be finalized on merit basis if the number of applications is high. The Entrance test will be conducted in the month of June every year.
  4. Selected candidates will have to go through MKCL registration process.
Procedure for Registration:

Interested candidates are required to fill in the online registration form provided on http://bamu.digitaluniversity.ac and submit the print out of the filled in form along with the necessary attested documents & the prescribed fees to the department.

Pattern of CET

Pattern of CET - Environmental Science

Students those who are seeking admission to M. Sc. (Environmental Science) in the Department for an Academic Year 2016-2017 have to go through the CET Examination. After the scheduled entrance examination evaluation, the final merit list of provisionally selected candidates will be prepared based on 50% Marks from Qualifying Degree Score and 50% Marks from CET Score. The students appeared in Final Year (B.Sc. with Environmental Science, Botany, Zoology, Physics, Chemistry, Micro-biology, Bio-chemistry, Bio-technology, Earth Science, B.Sc. in Agriculture and Forensic Science / B.E.(Bachelor of Engineering) shall be held eligible for CET Examination.

Additional weightage of 1% will be given to the candidates who offered Environmental Science as one of the optional subjects at the B.Sc. level for seeking admission to M.Sc. Environmental Science.

Ph.D. Program (Environmental Science)

The admission for Ph.D. is through PET Examination and as per the University rules. Seats are allocated as per the available Guide’s quota.

Facility for son / daughter / ward of Secondary Teacher (S.S.T.)
Candidates who are son / daughter / ward of Secondary Teachers & seeking the tuition fees facility should submit their application to the concerned departments. The forms should be carefully filled in and should be complete in all respects.

Facility for son / daughter / ward of Ex-serviceman / Freedom Fighter
Candidates who are son / daughter / ward of Ex-serviceman / Freedom Fighter and seeking the tuition fees facility should submit their application signed with the seal of the District Ex-serviceman Welfare Board to the concerned department. The forms should be carefully filled in and complete in all respects. Application for BBC facility must be submitted before the last date in the concerned departments. Applications received after the last date will not be entertained.

Schedule of application procedure for candidates of E.B.C., P.S.T., S.S.T., and Ex-Serviceman will be communicated to Departments through circular by P.G. section EBC, PST, SST. Facility for non-granted courses is subject to the decision of the Government Authority.

Scholarship - Govt. of India Scholarship (G.O.I.)

The Government of India (G.O.I.) gives scholarships for students belonging to the reserved categories. The online application form in the proper format and supported by the following documents must be submitted to the Post-Graduate Section (Admission Unit) before the last date. Applications received after the last date will not be entertained under any condition. AADHAR CARD No. is compulsory for Scholarship holder students. Management Quota Students are not eligible for GOI and Freeship Scholarship (e.g., MBA, MCA, B.Tech. Students of Management Quota are not eligible for this facility.)

  1. New scholarship application form with a passport-size photograph of the student must be duly signed by the competent authority.
  2. Application for scholarship forms must be submitted with attested copies of the following documents:
    • Transfer Certificate (Photocopy of original T.C.)
    • Caste Certificate
    • Income Certificate of the father/guardian (original) (issued by the Executive Magistrate)
    • Attested Copy of Death Certificate in case of the death of the father.
    • March Salary Certificate of parents in case of service.
    • Photocopy of Mark Memo.
    • Certificate from the hostel in case of a student staying at the hostel.
    • Income Certificate of the husband must be given in the case of a married girl student.
    • District change certificate must be given in case of a student coming from another district.

In case of Duplicate T.C., no concession/scholarship will be given. Such students will have to pay full fees.
Scholarship will be issued to the students who have fulfilled 75% attendance.
The income of the guardian of the student should be less than the limit declared by the Govt. from time to time.
The caste of the student (Schedule caste, Schedule Tribe, Nomadic and De-notified Tribe, Other Backward Special Backward Categories) must be included in the list as per the govt. policy for reservation.
Students or parents of students belonging to Erstwhile Schedule Caste who have later converted to the Buddhist religion (Buddhism) are entitled to obtain a scholarship.
Candidates who applied for vocational courses can obtain a scholarship whether they passed or failed in the course (Degree/ Diploma) from the Arts, Commerce, and Science faculty. But such students cannot further change their course.
Candidates who have once accepted a scholarship for a vocational course are not allowed to get a scholarship for the next vocational course.
Candidates working in a full-time job are not eligible for a scholarship. But the candidate learning on leave without salary will be eligible for a scholarship.
Scholarship will not be given to more than two children in the same family. (This condition is not applicable in the case of girls) (The third child will not get the scholarship.) (Exception: If the second child is twins or more than two, consider as one unit.)
Candidates should fill out a new application form for a scholarship in case of their first admission. Second-year candidates should process as directed by the Social Welfare office. A new application form should be filled out in case of any gap.

Important notes about scholarships / Fellowships

Exam appearance is compulsory for GOI, Freeship, EBC, PST, SST, Ex-Serviceman, Freedom fighter, and other scholarship facility holders. Otherwise, the student must have to pay total tuition fees.
Scholarship facility is not for Certificate, Diploma courses.
In some scholarships, Tuition Fees are not transferred to the university/college account. Students must have to pay their tuition fees (e.g., Minority Scholarship, Handicapped Scholarship, etc.)

About Other Scholarships:
  1. Vidyavetan Facility:
    Application form should be submitted in P.G. Section Within the period of 15 days after the completion of admission. Govt. Hostel Certificate is necessary to fulfill this form.
    This facility is only for SC, ST, DNT students who have completed their admission for professional Courses. ST Students must attach an attested caste validity certificate with the scholarship form, and if the Student is living in a hostel, then they must furnish a Hostel Certificate.
  2. Important Note about Scholarship:
    A candidate is not eligible for GOI, EBC, PST, SST, Freedom fighter, or any governmental scholarship if he/she does not attend the exam and will have to pay full fees.
    Governmental Scholarship is not given for Diploma/Certificate Courses.
  3. Other Scholarships:
    Candidates of the University campus can get the following scholarships by the Govt. of Maharashtra and University as stated below:
    1. Eklavya Scholarship:
      This Scholarship will be given to the candidate who has secured 60% marks in Degree Exams in the Art Faculty and 70% Marks in Science Faculty Degree Examination. After submitting the application form in the proper format, the Eklavya Scholarship will be approved by the Director of Higher Education, Govt. of Maharashtra, Pune. The Annual Income of the parents of an applicant must be as prescribed by the Government.
    2. University Merit Scholarship:
      After completing the admission procedure of the University, the Scholarship will be granted to the applied candidates ranking 1st and 2nd as per merit in each subject. Three candidates of M.Phil. can get this Scholarship as per the merit list in each subject.
    3. Post Matriculation Scholarship:
      Post Matriculation Scholarship for students belonging to Minority communities (Muslim, Parshi, Sikh, Christian, Buddha, Jain) learning in the university.
    4. Scholarship for Non-Hindi Language Speakers:
      Non-Hindi Language speakers who are studying in the Hindi language could submit their applications in the proper format for the Scholarship for Non-Hindi language speakers. The Scholarship for Non-Hindi Language speakers will be given to four candidates only.
Rules for Scholarship Holders:
  • A candidate will get only one scholarship at a time. Legal action will be taken against a candidate accepting two scholarships at a time. Students must furnish the form in the Hindi Department.
  • It is mandatory to submit the application form for a scholarship within the stipulated time.
  • The amount of scholarship will be given only after its approval and acceptance of the amount of scholarship by the University.

The Department has infrastructure and research laboratories and well equipped instrumentation laboratory with sophisticated equipment and computer lab with 15 computers with GIS Software. The students are provided internet facility. Almost all the essential books as per present syllabus are available in the central library. The department is also providing a consultancy services to the industry/institution and peoples.

Research Activity

The department of Environmental Science is actively involved in research activities, specifically faculties are working on various important environmental issues such as water, air, soil, and noise pollution. The pollution studies in and in the vicinity of Aurangabad from Marathwada and other parts of India were carried out. Special attention has been given to studying solid waste-related issues along with sustainable developmental issues and industrial environmental problems. Research work related to industrial wastewater treatment and sewage is being carried out. Resource studies, including work related to wildlife, forests, and energy resources, have also been conducted.

Research projects related to the above-mentioned areas were submitted to different funding agencies such as UGC, DST, DBT, MOEF, Govt. of Maharashtra, and BNRS etc. Many projects were implemented successfully, and some are ongoing and sanctioned. The output of some work in the field of solid waste management studies and industrial effluent treatment was patented by the faculty.
