A comparative study of the effect of specific isotonic exercises on muscular strength among 14 to 16-year-old boys

Author: Dr. Mrs. K.B. Zarikar

Abstract: The effect of specific isotonic exercises on muscular strength was studied. The study included 120 boys aged 14 to 16 from Tanwani English School. Participants were randomly assigned to three groups of 40 each: Experimental Group 1 (Body Weight Group - BWG), Experimental Group 2 (Thera Band Group - TBG), and a Control Group. A pre-test and post-test equivalent group design was used. The Kraus-Weber Muscular Strength test (specifically, the Strength of abdominal plus psoas muscle test and the Strength of upper back muscle test) was administered to all groups before and after the intervention. The experimental groups participated in body weight and Thera Band exercise programs, respectively, for six months, while the control group received no training. Mean, standard deviation, and ANCOVA (at a 0.05 significance level) were used for statistical analysis. Results indicated a significant difference in abdominal plus psoas muscle and upper back muscular strength among the 14 to 16-year-old boys.

Participants were randomly assigned to two groups of 20: an Experimental group (A) and a Control group (B). The crunch test was used. Calculated t-values for the experimental and control groups were 9.96 and 1.55, respectively. The table value of 't' at a 0.05 significance level was 2.09. Results showed a significant difference between pre- and post-test scores in the experimental group but no significant difference in the control group. The study concluded that Thera Band exercises significantly increased muscular strength in the experimental group.
