Situated against the backdrop of world-famous Buddhist caves, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad, has inherited a rich legacy of Buddhist philosophy and art. To acknowledge and express its connection with this heritage, the university has established the ‘GAUTAM BUDDHA STUDY CENTRE’.

The Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University has recently founded the Gautam Buddha Study Center. Buddhism stands as one of the world's great peace-loving religions, influential not only in Asia but globally. It emphasizes the importance of knowledge and the detrimental nature of ignorance. Buddhism is renowned for its accurate assessment of humanity's inherent capacity for self-realization, thereby highlighting the individual's power to strive for excellence. At its core, Buddhism focuses on human welfare, aiming to alleviate suffering and misery and guide society toward integrity and a dignified existence.

Marathwada University, established on 23rd August 1958 and later renamed Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University on 14th January 1994, is situated in the historical city of Aurangabad. Its jurisdiction covers the Marathwada region and today encompasses 234 colleges, 9 recognized institutions, and 36 postgraduate departments across 16 faculties. The university caters to 137,450 undergraduate and postgraduate students, with a strong emphasis on promoting higher education among rural students. The commendable "Earn & Learn" scheme supports economically disadvantaged youth, fostering dignity of labor and responsibility. The university is dedicated to enhancing teaching and research standards, expanding research into contemporary knowledge, and celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 2007-08.

The Gautam Buddha Study Center was inaugurated by Prof. Labh from Jammu & Kashmir University, with the participation of scholars, academicians, and teachers. In its initial year, the center organized a two-day workshop for students from all departments, culminating in a visit to Ajanta where 150 participating students received insights on the frescoes and murals from trained guides.

1. Gautam Buddha Study Center will focus on the following areas:
  • Buddhist Thought
  • Buddhism and the welfare of the marginalized.
  • Buddhism and status of women
  • Buddhism and social transformation.
  • Buddhist teachings for youth orientation.
  • Buddhism and the problems of Dalits and their upliftment.
2. Plan of integrated activities:
  • Gautam Buddha Study Center will conduct Conferences, seminars, and symposia.
  • Minor research projects in Buddhist thought will be undertaken.
  • It is proposed to starts a library with books on Buddhism, posters, paintings and paper clippings.
  • This study centre will collaborate with national and international Buddhist research institute
Facilities

Library: The Library of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University houses a valuable collection of rare books and contemporary works, including books, journals, e-journals, and e-library resources. Its vintage collection features a rich array of books on Buddhist thoughts and philosophy. The library also provides learners with e-mail, web surfing, and download facilities.

Vision

The philosophy of Lord Buddha is the source of all sciences, with clarifying this relationship between all science and Gautam Buddha’s philosophy, to maximize the value of all courses in the university.

Programmes and Activities

The center will seek to acquaint the young generation with the philosophy of Gautam Buddha. Therefore, it seeks to pursue the following programmes and activities derived from the main aims and objectives mentioned in the proposal:

  • To set up a resource center for students, teachers, scholars, policymakers, and administrators with library facilities and resource persons to expose a large number of scholars to these studies.
  • To organize seminars, workshops, and lecture series on vital issues and to supply printed material of these lectures to the users.
  • To conduct orientation & training programmes.
  • To conduct full-time and part-time courses (Diploma / Certificate) for students, including short-term courses of 3-6 months.
  • To conduct research by M.Phil / Ph. D. students and other scholars.
  • The Center will publish articles, projects, research papers, seminar proceedings, etc.
  • The Center will act as a National / International collaborative, comparative center and will provide the facilities to do so.
  • To undertake such other activities and endeavors as would be considered suitable for further aims and objectives of the center.
