Established in 1962 the department is a pioneer in leaf protean and Aerobiology research in India. It has one of the largest University Herbariums in the country with over one lakh specimen. One of the largest University Botanical garden in an area of 44 acres is included in the directory of the Botanical gardens and parks in India. This department came into being in 1959. The only Department with DNA Bar coding facility in its Paul Herbert Center with state of art facilities. The department established Sub-Centre for marine Research laboratory at Bhatye, Ratnagiri which was titled as Centre for Coastal and Marine Bio-diversity and made headway in Marine Research a big cap in its achievement. One of the departments with highest number of Research projects and to have signed MoU with institutions of higher learning in countries like Israel, Poland, New Zealand, East Africa and Slovakia.
Initially started in 1985 as a multi disciplinary subject, this department became an independent department in 1994 - during the renaming of the university. It has developed innovative Models, Educational Material, charts and exhibits for creating awareness on the issues of environment in the region. It also offers consultancy services to local industries in Aurangabad and acts as a Research Unit in guiding and counseling the industries and the Municipal Corporation for the protection of Environment and developed a bird habitat where hundreds of birds seek shelter in department campus.
An independent Bio-Chemistry department was set up in 1992. An exclusive Laboratory not available elsewhere in India is the Plant Pest interaction Laboratory of the department. The department also has an Animal House Facility for conducting animal experiments. Other Science departments of the University are also using this facility. It has high number of Major Research Projects supported and financed by UGC / ICSSR with special thrust on proteomics bioinformatics.
