School of Social Sciences The following departments are grouped in this school:
a) Department of History & Ancient Indian Culture: The department was launched in 1962. The History Museum of the department is its exceptional contribution to the region. Housed in a separate building and planned by the famous heritage planner Grace Morley the museum is an aesthetically designed building consisting of artifacts including sculptures, paintings, coins, arms and armour from 2nd cent. B.C. to 18th cent. A.D.
b) Department of Economics: It’s one of the first two department that was established in the same year of the establishment of the University. The department has played an important role in the development of advanced studies in Economics in the region. It is also the beneficiary of the University Leadership Programme (UGC) during 1982-1988 and the Special Assistance Programme (SAP) both by the UGC for 1987, and from 2009 to 2012.
c) Department of Political Science: The department started in 1960. Department provides specialized subjects such as Political Theory and International Relation. Organizes lecture series each year in the name of Dr. Moin Shakir renowned social scientist. The department every year sends some students to attend the parliamentary procedure and practices at state assembly organized by commonwealth parliamentary association, Maharashtra Branch.
d) Department of Public Administration: Instituted as a separate department in 1991-92, the department has made considerable progress and has got the distinction of being the second independent department at university level in Maharashtra.
e) Department of Sociology: The department was setup in 1961. It is the beneficiary of the UGC Scheme of University Leadership Programme (UGC) from 1990. It has assisted various Colleges in implementing Social Schemes and its faculty works with the local police for rehabilitation of girl child.
f) Department of Physical Education: A department of special significance as it has a well developed sports complex that is equipped with a gymnasium hall, three indoor Badminton courts, two table tennis hall, Swimming pool, play fields for activities like cricket, Hockey etc. The department regularly organizes inter university tournaments as well as regional tournaments.
g) Department of Education : This is a young department that started in 2006 and it’s most unique feature is that it is the first department in Maharashtra and second in India to start computer assisted instruction learning and Training programme for all affiliated B.Ed. and M.Ed. college teachers. The department has a more student friendly approach as it has a suggestion Box and first Aid Box for students.
h) Department of Psychology: The department started in 1972 but was located in other colleges under the University umbrella but it started in the University campus in 2007. The department contributes in a big way to the regional problems and issues of the mentally retarded children and is working in close association with Children's Institute and Nursing Homes and Hospitals for the Mentally Retarded.
i) Department of Life Long Learning and Extension: Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University established ‘National Adult Education and Extension Programme, as per the guidelines of the UGC. The aim of the programme involving University and Colleges is the eradication of illiteracy as a programme of national importance. The programme covers large areas of backward region of Marathwada and includes Jan Shikshan Nilayam Continuing Education, Population Education, Planning forum and total Literacy campaigns. The department conducts several training camps, workshops, campaigns, seminars for Aids Awareness, Programmes for prisoners, empowerment of Women, Rural cleaning campaigns, personality development for youth, eradication of superstition etc.
j) Department of Library & Information Science : Post Graduate Diploma in Library Science Course during June 1968, with the persistent efforts of the University Librarian Late Shri. N. A. Gore. During the year 1969, in all Universities in India the nomenclature of the course was changed from Diploma in Library Science to Bachelor of Library Science, hence the examination of the course was conducted as Bachelor of Library Science in March/April, 1969.From the year 2002 the University introduced 2-year integrated MLISc course with semester pattern. The course is of 16 modules with 64 credits.
k) Department of Geography: The department is still in its very nascent stages as its foundation was laid in 2009 but is starting to adopt modern teaching and learning methods by using G.I.S. for accurate map system and GPS to understand Global Position.
l) Department of Mass Communication & Journalism: Department of Journalism was established on 23rd Aug. 1973. In the Beginning Dept. was headed by eminent Journalist and renowned scholar Mr. S.M. Garge. Lender to his able leadership the Department started flourishing from the beginning itself. Later on department was headed by Dr. Y.M. Pathan, Dr. S.P. Pawar, Dr. V.L. Dharurkar and Prof. S.B. Puri subsequently.
m) Department of Commerce: Inaugurated in the year 1968 with only M.Com. the department instituted MBA in 1972. It has excellent industry interface that supports the students for placement. The department has been closely associated with Banking and recruitment support for students and has a well developed library.
