About Department

Established in 1962, department of history and Ancient Indian Culture is one of the oldest academic Department of University. It is a composite department teaching varied courses in Indian History, Non-Indian History giving emphases to emerging areas like social History, intellectual History and subaltern History. Department of History unanimously persuaded multifaceted terrain of research. Nevertheless it has chosen to give emphasis to history of Deccan. Present faculty is engaged in the various aspects of Deccan History ranging from Ancient to Modern.

The Department of History and Ancient Indian Culture of the Dr.BabasahebAmbedkarMarathewada University is one of the very few University in the entire country who has it own History Museum which provides a glimpse into the varied and variegated aspects of India`s glorious heritage of art and cultural History. The Dr.BabasahebAmbedkarMarathwada University is singularly fortunate in being located in the vicinity of the world famous cave monuments of Ajanta and Ellora. This region is an archaeological paradise. It has yielded remarkable artifacts of the Prehistoric times and can boast of a variety of cave temples and structural edifices.

In view of the rich archaeological, artistic and historical potential of this region. The Department made beginning in collecting objects of artistic and historical value as a curriculum. In course of time this efforts emerged as a very impressive project. The present collection includes stone sculptures, bronze, coins, miniature paintings, gold, Silver and copper coins, decorative arts, arms and armor, wood carvings and plain manuscripts and a variety of antiquities recovered in the archaeological excavations at Bhokhardhan, Ter [Satavahana sites] and Daulatabad.

Department offers M.A., M. Phil, Ph. D courses in History a PG. Certificate Course in Museum Studies is started from JUNE 2009. Department of History and AIC has rich legacy of research in Art Architecture, Archaeology, Maratha History, Modern Maharashtra and foreign History. In view of research interest of faculty and research students of this region, department of history has chosen History of Deccan as a thrust area of Department. History of Deccan is a multifaceted research area with manifold problematic of studying a region from ancient to modern periods, flexible enough to accommodate early history of Deccan, Medieval Deccan, and vibrant history of Marathas to colonial western India. The faculty and research students are taking various topics like cultural history: Art Architecture, Archaeology, and history of religious Movements, Social History: various social formations and changes therein, caste and gender movements, intellectual History; philosophical and ideological genealogy; Economic History: Trade and Urbanization, Historiography, studies of emancipation: women’s movement, peasant and Dalit Movement, Hyderabad freedom Struggle. Teachers in the department are shouldering the responsibility as the Directors of and perusing training, research and extension activities in concurrence with the thrust areas of department of History.

Vision

To structure the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University to be an Epitome of Excellence by creating and imparting time responsive Quality Education to address Changing Scenario, keeping Research and Development at its core, for 'Anyone' at 'Anytime' and 'Anywhere'.

Mission

To enhance the numerical graph of higher education amongst the youth of the region; enrich the quality and standard of teaching and learning through modern technology & science; create sound research background, excellent human resource with versatile personality, stimulate and support pro-poor community activities and in doing so strengthen all round regional progress and development.

Research activities in the department would be strengthened. To this end, the department is planning to emphasis on research activities with the support from the head of the university. The faculty members will undertake Minor/Major research projects with financial assistance from UGC, ICSSR and other funding agencies. For this, we would make the maximum use of the computers in the teaching and research activities. The departmental library will start functioning from next academic year and the department plans to subscribe the referred journals relevant to the subject. Audio-visual teaching aids and internet would be used limberly for class room instruction.

The department is planning to sign MoUs with Indian Universities/Institutions to establish cooperation in the areas of teaching, research and training. The department is planning to publish a book of M.Phil./PhD dissertations abstract.

Objectives

Department faculty took interest in motivating students and gave counselling to them in their academic and career problems. BrahmanandDeshpande delivered few lectures on recent researches in Ajanta Ellora studies.

Large numbers of students were enrolled in the Department coming from marginalized sections of the society like SC’s, ST’s and OBC and religious minorities. The numbers of girls enrolled in MA courses are more than 20 percent nevertheless the majority of the girl students came from marginalized and backward sections of the society. 90 percent of the students come from rural areas and other SEBC category of the society. In that light Departmental faculty takes efforts to train them in academic language and supports them in their day to day academic problems.

Admissions Process
  • In response to the advertisement for registration, (in newspapers and University Website in the last week of May), interested students will have to register themselves.
  • Duly filled Application Form (available on University website) should be filled in prescribed format and submitted to the Department office.
  • Admission will be done on the basis of performance of students at Entrance Test (CET). Number of students called for the written test may be finalized on merit basis if the number of applications is high. The Entrance test will be conducted in the month of June every year.
  • Selected candidates will have to go through MKCL registration process.
  • Procedure for Registration: Interested candidates are required to fill in the online registration form provided on http://bamua.digitaluniversity.ac and submit the print out of the filled in form along with the necessary attested documents & the prescribed fees to the department.
  • Original and/or Attested copies of the following documents are essential at the time of admission:
    1. Photo ID proof as per Govt. of India norms (Voter Id /Aadhar card/ Driving License)

M.A. History

  • Students those who are seeking admission to M. A. (History) in the Department for an Academic Year 2016-2017 have to go through the CET Examination.
  • The final merit list of provisionally selected candidates will be prepared based on 50% Marks from Qualifying Degree Score and 50% Marks from CET Score. The students appeared in Final Year (B.A./ B.Sc. /B.Com./B.F.A) or previously passed are eligible for CET Examination.

  • The objective type questions will be set for CET examination. The subjects are based on Graduate Level:

M. Phil.(History)

  • Those students who are seeking admission to M. Phil. in History in the Department for Academic Year 2016-2017 have to go through the CET Examination. The final merit list of provisionally selected candidates will be prepared based on evaluation criteria mentioned in evaluation.

  • The course is designed to motivate technical ability through research perspective.Research work/dissertation work would be carried out under the guidance of the highly qualified teachers in the Department. To get research training to simplify Ph. D. work.

Scholarships

Schedule of application procedure for candidates of E.B.C., P.S.T., S.S.T. and Ex-Serviceman will be communicated to Departments through circular by P.G. section EBC, PST, SST. Facility for non-granted courses is subject to decision of GovernmentAuthority.

Scholarship Govt. of India Scholarship (G.O.I.)

The Government of Indian (G.O.I.) gives scholarships for students belonging to the reserved categories. Online application form in properformat and supported by following documents must be submitted to Post-Graduate Section (Admission Unit) before the last date. The applications received after the last date will not be entertained in any condition. AADHAR CARD No. is compulsory for Scholarship holder students.

A. New scholarship application form with passport size photograph of the student must be duly signed by the competent authority.

B. Application for scholarship forms must be submitted with attested copies of following documents:

  • Transfer Certificate (Photocopy of original T.C.)
  • Caste Certificate
  • Income Certificate of the father/guardian (original) (issued by the Executive Magistrate)
  • Attested Copy of Death Certificate in case of death of the father.
  • March Salary Certificate of parents in case of service.
  • Photocopy of Mark Memo.
  • Certificate from hostel in case of student staying at hostel.
  • Income Certificate of the husband must be given in case of married gin student.
  • District change Certificate must be given in case of student coming from other district.

Incase of Duplicate T.C. no concession! Scholarship will be given. Such students will have to pay full fees.

Scholarship will be issued to the students who have fulfilled 75% attendance.

Income of the guardian of the student should be less than limit declared by Govt. time to time.

Caste of the student (Schedule caste, Schedule Tribe. Nomadic and De notified Tribe. Other Backward Special Backward Categories) must be included in the list as per the govt. policy for reservation.

Students or parents of students belonging to Erstwhile Schedule Caste who have later converted to Buddhist religion (Buddhism) are entitled for obtaining scholarship.

Candidates applied for the vocational courses can obtain scholarship eitherthey passed or failed in the course (Degree/ Diploma) from Arts. Commerce and Science faculty. But such students cannot further change their course.

Candidate who have once accepted scholarship for vocational course are not allowed to get scholarship for the next vocational course.

Candidates working in the full time job are not eligible for scholarship. But the candidate learning on leave without salary will be eligible for scholarship.

Scholarship will not be given to more than two children in the same family. (This condition is not applicable in case of girls) (Third will not get the scholarship.) (Exception If Second child is as twins or more than two consider as one unit.)

Candidate should have new application form for scholarship in case of his/ her first admission. Second year candidates do process as per directed by Social Welfare office. New application form should be filled in case of any gap.

Important notes about scholarships /Fellowships

Exam appearance is for GOI. Freeship. EBC, PST, SST, Ex-Serviceman, Freedom fighter and other scholarship facility holder. Otherwise student must have to pay total tuition fees.

Scholarship facility is not for Certificate, Diploma courses.

In some scholarships' Tuition Fees is not transfer to university /college account. Student must have to pay their tuition fees. (for ex. Minority Scholarship, Handicapped Scholarship etc.)

About Other Scholarships:

Important Note about Scholarship:

Candidate is not eligible for GOI, EBC. PST, SST, Freedom fighter or any governmental scholarship. if he/she does not attend exam, and will have to pay full fees.

Governmental Scholarship is not given for Diploma/ Certificate Courses.

Candidates of University campus can get following scholarships by Govt. of Maharashtra and University as stated below:

Eklavya Scholarship:

This Scholarship will be given to the candidate who has secured 60% marks in Degree Exams in Art Faculty and 70 % Marks in Science Faculty Degree Examination. After submitting application form in proper format, Eklavya Scholarship will be approved by the Director of Higher Education. Govt. of Maharashtra.Pune. The Annual Income of the parents of an applicant must be prescribed by Government.

University Merit Scholarship:

After completing the admission procedure of the University Scholarship will be granted to the applied candidates ranking 1st and 2nd as per merit in each subject. Three candidates of M.Phil. Can get this Scholarship as per merit list in each subject.

Post Matriculation Scholarship:

Post Matriculation Scholarship for students 'belonging to Minority communities. The students belonging to the Minority communities (Muslim, Parshi.Shikh. Christian, Buddha, Jain) learning in the university.

The scholarship holders of any kind are supposed to abide the following rules:

  • Candidate will get only one scholarship at a time. Legal action will be taken against a candidate accepting two scholarships at a time.
  • It is mandatory to submit the application form for scholarship within the stipulated time.
  • The amount of scholarship will be given only after its approval and acceptance of the amount of scholarship by the University.

INFRASTRUCTURE

Presently department is housed in spacious building of Social Sciences, where there are two teaching halls for M.A. I and II, cabins for all the faculties members, office and cabins for archaeological assistance. Department has its own museum where there are two halls with three galleries documentation centre, library and office of the museum.

  1. Departmental Seminar Room is under work and proposal is submitted to develop departmental seminar room and smart classes for academic exercises
  2. Department is working on reprinting the exclusive books published by department earlier
  3. Department is in process of submitting report of excavation coordination carried in Rakhigarhi-Haryana in 2013-2014
  4. Department will organise excavations of archaeological sites in Marathwada in line of previous excavations done by Department in Bhokhardan, Ter and Daulatabad.
  5. Department received the grants the Cultural Ministry to enhancement of the resources of Museum under the project Strengthening of the Regional Museums. Under this project Department has undertaken the documentation project where cataloguing of coins (More than 3000) was completed with the help of numismatic society, Anjenaeri, Nasik.
  6. Department has undertaken one line catalogue of Modi Documents; 6000 documents are catalogued and catalogue of Gold coins soon
  7. Department is renovated one Museum hall of rare historical paintings
  8. Department is published portfolio and annotated book of our precious collection Baramasa
  9. Department is equipped with computers LCD projectors, Xerox Machine, Printers to facilitate the teaching and learning in the Department.
  10. Department has its Departmental Library which is housed in History Museum with a collection of 2000 rare books and journals and 2500 History books with recent publications.

Department has its own museum where there are two halls with three galleries documentation centre, library and office of the museum.

  • History Museum possesses rich collections of rare books and documents. More than 3050 books 1000 manuscripts and 20000 documents of Maratha Period is in the Library. It has a unique collection of books on art and aesthetics.
  • The section of rare book collection has been catalogued and computerized and is in process of being restored.
  • The scanner and digitization of documents has availed scholars an easy access to the material.
  • The oldest gazetteer belongs to 1884. This collection is most liked by the researches in the field of art and social history.
  • The archival section of museum has collection of around 1000 religious manuscripts few of them are illustrated.
  • The section of Modi papers of Maratha period (1700 to 1850) contains a part of MenavliDaftar of Nana Phadnavis, the finance officer of Peshavas.
  • The library is one of the treasures of the museum.

In theDepartmental Library Housed in History Museum there is a big collection of digital form in Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj Digital Archives,to access to the students for research work, i.e. Old Historic Journals, News Papers, Rare books, world thinkers, etc.


History Museum

The Department of History & Ancient Indian Culture, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad possesses its own History Museum. It has unique valuable collection ranging from Paleolithic to Early Historic and from Early Medieval to Mughal and Colonial periods. The museum was initiated in 1973 by Dr. R.S. Gupte, the then professor and head of Department of History and Ancient Indian Culture. The collaborative effort of the department's faculty and staff was materialized in the museum building in 1983. The rich collection of Museum was enriched by the donations of Dr. S. B. Deshmukh the ex-curator of the museum. Later additions from Sir Rao Bahadur Parasnis fabulous collection and Sardar Bavane's collections of the paintings boosted the artistic and the antiquarian value of the Museum possession.

Research Activity
  • All the faculty members Department are picking different research themes from Ancient and Medieval Deccan, Maratha History and Western India.
  • They are innovatively engaged in the research which employs new research methods with different approaches like feminism, subaltern, environmentalist and anti-caste.
  • Department is keen to develop the resources of research by collaborated efforts to bring different important sources to Departmental library, housed in the Department’s History Museum.
  • Departmental faculty will undertake research assignments in varied ways like; writing research articles, monographs, books, editing research projects.
  • The department will continue to organize the seminars workshops, conferences of International, National and Regional level.

Academic:

Department accepted the recommendation of NAAC Committee 2002 and implemented semester system, credit system and cafeteria approach in 2006. Department initiated new pedagogies of participatory learning and organized quiz, field studies, study tours, student seminars. Department restructured the syllabus in 2006 and 2009 to suit to contemporary challenges in the field of knowledge. Department launched Certificate Course in Museum Studies to make historic learning applicable, which can generate employment. Department laid the structure of democratic discussions by linking it to the faculty of colleges and the activists. Department initiated faculty seminars and guest lecture series. Department organized seminars, workshops, conferences in total six (06) from 2002-2010.

Infrastructure Academic achievements:

Department applied to strengthen the Departmental Museum to Cultural Ministry, Government of India. Submitted project and received grants of 22 Lakhs. Under the project strengthening regional Museums. Department rigorously worked and completed documentation project. Enhanced infrastructure updated records undertaken conservation planned publications, rearranged the concept of museum to suit to historical aesthetical interests. Department made provisions for technological enhancement of the resources of teaching and learning. Department purchased computers, digital cameras, LCD projector. Department furnished a conference hall for MA II year.

Student Qualifications & Fellowships:
  • More than 55 students qualified NET/SET exams in last five years (37 + 18).
  • 10 Students received The Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship (RGNF).
  • 2 Students received UGC-JRF.
  • 2 Students received BARTI.
Museum Grant:

Departments History Museum Received Grant of twenty lakhs from Central Cultural Ministry Under the scheme for Financial Assistance for promoting and strengthening of Regional and Local Museums.

History Association:

Department started History Association which organized lectures of nationally and International acclaimed scholars and also engaged discussions on books and articles.
