Professor B.A. Chopade has been working as a Vice-Chancellor of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad, Maharashtra, India from 04/06/2014. He is distinguished scientist, innovator and academician of international repute. He is institution builder, great visionary, research mentor and proven very innovative administrator. After completing Ph.D. in Europe and Post-Doctorate research in America, USA, he returned to India and joined University of Pune and developed excellent Department of Microbiology. He established Institute of Bioinformatics and Biotechnology (IBB), University of Pune.Under his distinguished leadership as a Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University has developed as a premiere university in the country. This is his original and pioneering contribution for higher education in India. Professor Chopade also contributed significantly for development of universities in India. He has mentored 29 Ph.D., 4 M.Phil and 10 Post-Doctoral scientist and 18 M.Tech scholars who are occupying significant research positions in academics and industry all over the world. He has had very distinguished academic and research career as well as proven administration. He has carved his career entirely on the basis of merit and academic excellence.

Professor Chopade has several national and international academic honors and professional distinctions to his credits. He was the Government of India Scholar at the University of Nottingham, England and obtained a Ph.D. degree in microbiology and molecular genetics (1983-1986), under prestigious National Overseer Scholarship of Govt. of India. It is important to note that this same fellowship was awarded to former President of India Mr. K.R. Narayanan.He was also the recipient of the most prestigious Fogarty International NIH Research Fellowship Award from Govt. of USA for Post-Doctoral research at the University of Illinois at Chicago in genetic engineering (1994-1996). He is also recipient of International Award in Microbiology from International Union of Microbiological Societies (IUMS) in 1986. He is also recipient of most prestigious award of Bronze Medal, from International Genetically Engineered Machines (iGEM), from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA (2009). He was a visiting scientist at the Pasteur Institute, Paris, France and King's College, University of London in 1990.

He is also a life member of number of national organizations like Association of Microbiologist of India (AMI) and Biotechnology Society of India (BSI), Society of Biological Chemists of India (SBC) Indian Science Congress (ISC). He is recipient of Marcus’s Who’s Who in Science and Engineering U.S.A. (2001), Marcus’s Who’s Who of the World, U.S.A. (2000), Marcus’s Who’s Who in Medicine, U.S.A. (2002), Marcus’s Who’s Who in Education, U.S.A. (2002). He is member of American Society for Microbiology, USA and Society for General Microbiology, England since 1984.

He has published more than 125 original research papers in 73 different International peer reviewed reputed journals with high impact factors in microbiology and biotechnology. The total impact factor of his research is more than 285, with h-index 41 and i10-index 93. His work is cited more than 5343 times Scopus total citations are 3150 with h-index 33 and 101 documents by author as well as 150 co-authors. ( . His pioneering work on e-DNA and Acinetobacter vesicles is also cited four times by "Nature" a most prestigious journal from London, England , similarly Nature publication viz. His work also has been cited in 3 textbooks of microbiology published from USA and Europe. He has presented more than 170 papers in International and National Conferences and has given more than 160 plenary lectures at national and international conferences. He has made fundamental contributions in the area of gene transfer, plasmid biology, molecular microbiology, nanomicrobiology, virology, biotechnology, nanobiotechnology and nanomedicine. He is on the editorial board of number of peer reviewed journals in India and abroad. He has organised more than 119 national, international conferences, seminars and workshops.

He is outstanding mentor in Microbiology and Biotechnology and 29 Ph.D., 10 Post-Doctoral scientists, 4 M.Phil. and 18 M.Tech. scholars completed their research. Currently 5 Ph.D. students are working with him. His 3 students had obtained Young Scientist Awards in 1993 at Stockholm, from International Congress of Chemotherapy (ICC), Europe. His 07 students obtained most prestigious Kishore Vignan Puraskar Award for their research from Department of Science and Technology (DST) Government of India. These all students belonged to Institute of Bioinformatics and Biotechnology (IBB) and Grants Medical College Mumbai. He has obtained research grants and funding of more than ₹ 47.78 crores from national and international funding agencies. He has successfully completed 35 major research projects from various national and international funding agencies. He has developed a new herbal medicine "Infex" which is manufactured by Shrushti Herbal Pharma Ltd., Bangalore since 2006.

He is a pioneer in the area of Industry-Academia interactions and entrepreneurship in biotechnology and microbiology at Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad as well as at IBB, Savitribai Phule University of Pune. He is also pioneer in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and development of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad as well as Universities in India. He has successfully mobilized about ₹ 25 crores under CSR programme from 2014 till today from various corporate organisations in India. NITI Ayog, Govt. of India has sanctioned a special grant of ₹ 10 crores for Atal Incubation Center in May, 2018. Similarly Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship of Govt. of Maharashtra has also sanctioned ₹ 8 crores for Incubation Center to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad, at present number of incubatees are working in Incubation Center on the campus. This is the only university in Maharashtra having this unique facility. He is on editorial board of Wealth of India Publication series, from CSIR New Delhi, as well as number of research journals.

He was founding Director of Institute of Bioinformatics and Biotechnology (IBB), University of Pune from 2006 to 2012. He has established and developed IBB as a unique national institute and as a centre of excellence in research, innovation and teaching and learning in biotechnology in India. He has successfully established an innovative benchmarking of publications in peer reviewed international journals of repute by undergraduate students at IBB, this is unique achievement in the country. This programme was very much successful and was accepted by Govt. of India and based on this started similar programme at Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) chain of institutes across the country. He also established most innovative administrative practices with accountability and transparency at IBB, University of Pune.

He was Head of the Department of Microbiology, University of Pune from 1994, 1996-2000 and 2003-2006. He has 36 years of experience in research, innovation, teaching and administration at the University of Pune as well as other university in Great Britain and USA. He was also coordinator of ALIS link programme between British Council London and Department of microbiology, University of Pune (1994-1997). He served as a Professor of Microbiology (1998) and Coordinator of University of Potential Excellence Programme (UPE Phase I & II) of UGC in Biotechnology at University of Pune (2006-2014).

He has been working on various authorities of many State and Central Universities in India, University of Pune and National Institutes under CSIR and DST of Government of India. He was a member of organising committee of Post-Centenary Silver Jubilee celebration of Birth Anniversary of Bharatratna Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, set up by Govt. of Maharashtra (2015-16). Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University was first in the country to initiate the grand celebration of this event on 02/06/2015 by Rajmata Shubhangi Raje Gaikwad of Baroda. Maximum number of programmes were conducted with record publication of 07 books by university. He was also a member of Govt. of Maharashtra’s Expert Committee for approval of private universities in Maharashtra in 2015, Member of Task force of Govt. of Maharashtra on Globalization of Higher Education of Universities in Maharashtra (2016). He is Chairman of committee/s of National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) for assessment of several universities and colleges in India.

He was chairman of large number of committees of UGC, New Delhi such as 11th Plan Research Committee, Research Projects and Deemed University Status since 2008. He is member of research and recognition committees of numerous state and central universities in India. He also worked as a coordinator of DBT Potential Excellence Programme at the Department of Microbiology, University of Pune (1994-1998). He is nominee of Department of Biotechnology, Government of India for Reliance Industries limited Mumbai, Biorefinery of Somaiya Group of Industries in Karnataka and Agarkar Research Institute (ARI) Pune, a DST sponsored institute of Govt. of India.

Under the distinguished academic and administrative leadership of Professor B.A. Chopade, university has received a national recognition. In survey of India Today on 6th June 2017, University has received 21st rank among 800 universities also in the India Today Survey dated 5th August, 2015 University has received 18th rank among 800 universities in India and 3rd rank in western India. Similarly in first ever Indian ranking 2016, National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) by MHRD, New Delhi, our university ranked 87th in the country. In NIRF 2018, our University has obtained a second rank in Maharashtra after Pune University and 107th rank in India. 'The Week'- Hansa research survey of best Universities in India in 2016, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University has obtained 55th rank in India and 11th rank among 20 top universities in West Zone of India. FIST programme of Department of Science and Technology (DST) Govt. of India was obtained by Department of Chemistry, Physics and Computer Science in 2016. Our university is a lead university in Rashtriya Ucchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) in Maharashtra. RUSA Advanced Center for Nanosensors is sanctioned with a special grant of ₹ 8 crore. Department of Chemistry and Physics obtained SAP programme of UGC in 2016. Similarly Department of Economics, Social Science and Political Science received Center of Potential Excellence in rural development by UGC, New Delhi at national level. This has enabled our university eligible for University of Potential Excellence (UPE) of UGC, New Delhi. This is a great achievement for our university in last one year.

University obtained a "National Resource Center (NRC) in Science and Technology from University Grants Commission (UGC) New Delhi in June 2018. We are among 3 universities in Maharashtra getting NRC in Science and Technology involving Bio-Medical Image Processing. It is important to note that there are only 64 Centers of NRC in India. Thus our university has proved its excellence at National level.

Over the 4.8 years more than 27 MoUs are signed with universities in Japan, Europe, Australia, USA and China under his able leadership. This has opened gates for international collaboration. University got opportunity to lead the 12 Universities in India along with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mumbai under ERASUM MUNDUS programme as well as ERASMUS + programme from 2017 to till date. University obtained Erasums funding of ₹ 1 crore from European Union under the programme. 4 students completed one semester at European Universities. Similarly 07 Ph.D. scholar got opportunity for research for a period of 6 months to One year. Similarly 10 teacher were selected for a period of 1 month to 3 months in European universities under the programme. In this way International collaborations have been strengthened under the dynamic leadership of Vice-Chancellor, Professor B. A. Chopade. Currently EQASA and INNOTAL programmes of European Union has been going on and there are only 02 universities from India and our university is one among them. In fact we are the lead university in both the programmes. Under INNOTAL programme of European Union, we have established Talent Cocreation Lab at the Bajaj Incubation Centre in 2018. This is first laboratory of its kind in India. Besides this, large number of MoUs are also signed between many national institutes and universities. The foundation stone of the state-of-the-arts Jamanalal Bajaj Incubation Center has been established and inaugurated on 14/08/2018 and currently 20 incubatees are working at incubation centre. This incubation centre is only of its kind in India which is established under CSR by Industry such as Bajaj Group of industries.

Research Cell, Avishkar Cell as well as IPR Cell is established in 2016. University obtained third rank among 12 Universities in Maharashtra in Avishkar Research Competition. Besides this, a research cell has been formed to promote research in faculty and students in 2016 with budget of more than ₹ 5 crores. Overall university is progressing by leaps and bounds. He has initiated unique novel concepts of Jalyukta University and Vanyukta University for the first time in the world. He has founded the Gopinathrao Mundhe National Institute of Rural Development (GMNIRD) with its office on the campus of university. This is unique national institute of its kind in India and Govt. of Maharashtra has sanctioned ₹ 150 crore for the same.
