Tarabai Shinde Women Study Center

Introduction

The University started this Women's Studies Centre in April 2005.The Centre was sanctioned UGC Grant in 2009 and in year 2012 the Centre was given continuation in the second phase of its scheme for Women's Studies Centres in University & Colleges we now have a full time Teaching & Non-teaching staff funded by the UGC. The Centre's main objective is to promote research and teaching in the new inter-disciplinary field of Women's Studies, and also to explore new areas of outreach into the community on women's issues.

The Centre was born out of a felt need for imparting gender sensitivity and Women's perspectives to students, researchers, fellow academics and policy makers through relevant education. The initial spectrum of activities of the Centre included research and documentation, teaching of specific courses in other interdisciplinary programs of the Institute; preparing of teaching materials and aids; consultancy on gender themes and organizing and conducting of training programs, seminars and conferences. In recent years, the Centre has built on this rich experience of early years to focus its activities towards evolving MA-Program in Women's Studies. The Centre has also been involved in networking and extension for national and international advocacy on Women's issues since its inception.

It has a rich history of women centered research and advocacy and has demonstrated expertise, developed over several years, of teaching women's themes across other existing programs. The presence of a well-developed library and documentation facility also complements our aspirations.

New Subject

The most important element in doing Women's Studies is to have a critical approach, to look at familiar and accepted facts, images theories with a new vision, to think about oneself and those around us in a new way. Many of our male students have said that this course gave them a fresh understanding of the world; because gender is everywhere, but we have been taught not to think about or even see it.

About Tarabai Shinde Women's Study Centre
Women's Studies

Women's Studies is an academic discipline that developed out of the need for the feminist movement to understand the facts, causes and consequences of women's secondary status in society. Since the 1980's the discipline has grown in depth and coverage, and feminist thinkers have engaged in theoretical debate with scholars in the different social sciences and humanities.

Why the name of Tarabai Shinde?

Tarabai Shinde wrote an essay called "Stree-PurushTulna" which was published in 1882. This is perhaps the earliest example of a feminist text in Marathi. She sharply critiques the male-centered values of society, and the hypocritical attitudes held towards women in marriage, religious practices and social views on morality. Her text was neglected, maybe because her views were too uncomfortable, until it was published in a new edition by S.G. Malshe. Since then the text has been widely discussed and was translated into English by Rosalind O'Hanlon.

We chose the name of Tarabai Shinde for our Centre to honour her work, to acknowledge its place in feminist writing in Maharashtra, and to pledge to bring to light other women who have much to contribute to our understanding of society, but who may not receive adequate attention.

Importance of this subject in Marathwada

The Marathwada region in particular is characterized as socially and economically backward, but it is especially so in the area of gender. We observe a high percentage of child marriage in the case of girls, low female literacy, relatively high birth rates and a prevalence of patriarchal attitudes towards women. It may be argued that all these have to be changed before the region can achieve better results in economics development and human development. For these reasons, a Women's Studies Centre can play an important role in the area of training, teaching and research which will be crucial for the development of the region.

Training

The Centre is widely sought after for conducting training programs on gender issues. It has been involved in gender-sensitization workshops for diverse clientele. It is also recognized as a Centre for conducting Refresher Courses for Academic staff under the UGC scheme for faculty development. It has conducted sponsored programs for capacity building of staff working in the NGO sector on gender as well as women administrators. All training programs of the Centre involve participatory and inclusive methodologies. It regularly conducts programs on feminist research methodologies and doing gendered research.

About Tarabai Shinde

Tarabai ShindeAbout Tarabai Shinde

Tarabai Shinde (1850–1910) was a feminist activist who protested patriarchy and caste in 19th century India. She is known for her published work, Stri Purush Tulana ("A Comparison Between Women and Men"), originally published in Marathi in 1882. The pamphlet is a critique of upper-caste patriarchy, and is often considered the first modern Indian feminist text. It was very controversial for its time in challenging the Hindu religious scriptures themselves as a source of women's oppression, a view that continues to be controversial and debated today.

Social Work

Shinde was an associate of social activists Jotirao and Savitribai Phule and was a member of their Satyashodak Samaj ("Truth Finding Community") organisation. The Phules had started the first school for Untouchable caste girls in 1848, as well as a shelter for upper-caste widows in 1854 (who were forbidden from remarrying), and shared with Shinde an awareness of the separate axes of oppression that constitute gender and caste, as well as the intermeshed nature of the two.

TS-WSC Director

Tarabai Shinde Women's Study Centre seeks to study questions of gender in an interdisciplinary and comparative framework, thereby providing the space for creating a vibrant community of feminist academics, students, activists and artists concerned with issues of gender, sexuality and wider issues of power in society. Women's Studies in India emerged out of the conjunction of such diverse forces as the women's and democratic struggles, as well as state initiatives that critically examined the status of women in the country. The past three decades have witnessed the influence of these trends within academia, leading to path breaking feminist research in different disciplines, particularly in the social sciences and humanities. The growth of Women's Studies Centres/ Programmes in different Universities (and some autonomous research institutions), all over the country has demonstrated recognition of the issues that have been highlighted by the women's movement and feminist research over the past many years.

Research Activities

With the financial support from University Grants Commission and various bodies, Women Studies Centre at Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University is an interdisciplinary research unit. From the very beginning, Womens Study Centre is dedicated to the cause of gender sensitization programmes as well as serious academic research. It is also engaged in micro-level field studies, and generation of awareness programmes. It has also made sincere attempts to include women’s studies as part of the curricula. Womens Study Centre activities carried out at the Centre are multi-faceted. Besides being involved in various fields of research on women (carried out by Research Assistants employed by the Centre under the supervision of the Director and an Academic Committee comprised of Faculty members of the University), seminars and workshops are conducted regularly on different topics, sometimes in collaboration with other organizations. Research publications are an important aspect of Women Studies Centre, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University.
