Departmentt of History

About Department

Established in 1962, Department of History & Ancient Indian Culture is one of the oldest academic Departments of the University. It is a composite department teaching courses in Indian as well as non-Indian History. Is was headed by Prof. R.S. Gupte, art historian, until 1977. One of his predecessor was Prof A.R. Kulkarni, a renowned historian of the Marathas. Prof. V. Suryanarayan, who later became Prof. of History in North Eastern Hill University, Shilong and also Director of Department of South and Southeast Asian Studies at University of Chennai, were on its faculty. This has been one of the few departments in India teaching modern Chinese and Southeast Asian history. In 1970s it collaborated with Deccan College, Pune, to excavate the ancient site of Bhokardan. It is also credited with the study of township of Daulatabad (of medival times). Thanks to the efforts of this department the collection of University Library on art, architecture, China, and Southeast Asia has become rich.
